“Seeing Ourselves Through Technology” Post

We currently live in a world where we can connect with people on the other side of the world in the matter of seconds, have access to a plethora of information, and can even express ourselves though a small device. Living in the Internet Era has helped push humanity to a different level with innovations and the ever evolving ways of communication. In “Seeing Ourselves Through Technology”, Jill Rettberg writes about self-representation, and how technology has changed the ways we view ourselves and others. Being born into the Internet Era, we really haven’t had the opportunity to unplug ourselves for a quick second and take a look at it from a different vantage point. Self-Representation is human nature and something we have been doing long before this era and will continue to do so after. Even if some things do change, people who aren’t in a position of power aren’t looked upon and are ridiculed for doing the exact same thing as someone with status. The internet allows for people from all different walks of life to express their opinions in the matter of seconds without being held back like what has been done before the internet era, this still can’t change the people’s perception. Perception is a way of understanding or interpreting something. There is no 2 people who have lived the exact same life and our experiences throughout our lives build the way we perceive. The internet and social media allow us to control the narrative; filter out what we don’t want to share and share the way we want to be perceived. Profile pictures mean more than just a photograph of a person. They show one point in a timeline that is gradually changing. One person might view someone in a certain way and another might have a total different perception while the person was the constant. This is because of the different cultural and other cognitive filters of the two different people which causes them to react in different ways when the person was consistent. So when individuals differentiate how others view them vs how they view themselves, it it truly interesting. Life in itself has different meanings for different people, but the goal is to continue to grow and evolve. Technology might help us do that, but some things will sick to our society because they are just the nature of our complex species.
